GuitarTune -- Version 1.0 -- iOS 17.0+

Frequently Asked Questions

How does GuitarTune detect pitch?

GuitarTune uses AVAudioEngine for real-time audio analysis, all on-device. Your iPhone's microphone captures the sound of your instrument, and the app analyzes the audio signal to determine the fundamental frequency. This is compared against the target note to show you exactly how sharp or flat you are, measured in cents.

What instruments are supported?

GuitarTune supports Guitar, Bass, Ukulele, Violin, and Mandolin with standard tuning presets. Each instrument has its own set of string notes pre-configured, so you can switch between instruments with a single tap and start tuning immediately.

Can I use GuitarTune offline?

Yes, GuitarTune works fully offline. All pitch detection happens entirely on your device with no internet connection required. You can tune your instrument anywhere -- at home, on stage, outdoors, or in a studio -- with complete reliability.

How do I adjust tuning sensitivity?

Go to Settings and use the Threshold slider to adjust sensitivity from 1 to 10 cents. A lower value (e.g., 1 cent) requires more precise tuning before the indicator turns green, ideal for professional use. A higher value (e.g., 10 cents) is more forgiving, great for beginners or casual practice.

Why does the app need microphone access?

GuitarTune needs microphone access for real-time pitch detection only. Your microphone input is analyzed on-device to determine the pitch of your instrument. No audio is ever recorded, stored, or transmitted. You can manage this permission in Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone.

The tuner isn't detecting my instrument

Try these tips: Play your instrument close to your iPhone's microphone. Make sure you're in a quiet environment with minimal background noise. Check that microphone permission is enabled in Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone > GuitarTune. Play a single string clearly and let it ring out. If the issue persists, try restarting the app.

What does the cents display mean?

Cents are a unit of measurement for pitch, where 100 cents equals one semitone (the distance between adjacent notes). When GuitarTune shows +5 cents, your note is slightly sharp. When it shows -5 cents, it's slightly flat. The goal is to get as close to 0 cents as possible. The indicator turns green when you're within your set threshold.

Is my audio recorded or stored?

No, never. GuitarTune processes audio in real-time for pitch detection only. No audio is ever recorded, saved to your device, or transmitted anywhere. Once the audio signal is analyzed for its pitch, it is immediately discarded. Your privacy is completely protected.

Troubleshooting

Tuner not responding

Ensure microphone access is enabled in Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone > GuitarTune. Try closing and reopening the app. Make sure no other app is currently using the microphone.

Inaccurate pitch detection

Play your instrument closer to the microphone, reduce background noise, and play one string at a time. Let the string ring out clearly for the most accurate reading. Avoid playing near speakers or other sound sources.

Needle jumping erratically

This usually indicates too much background noise interfering with pitch detection. Move to a quieter environment and try again. You can also try increasing the sensitivity threshold in Settings for a more stable reading.
