DecibelGuard -- Version 1.0 -- iOS 17.0+
Frequently Asked Questions
How accurate is the dB measurement?
DecibelGuard uses your iPhone's built-in microphone and Apple's audio processing framework to measure sound levels. While consumer microphones are not calibrated laboratory instruments, the readings are reliable for general awareness and hearing protection. Accuracy is typically within 2-3 dB for mid-range levels. For professional-grade certified measurements, a calibrated external meter is recommended.
Does DecibelGuard drain my battery?
DecibelGuard is optimized for minimal battery impact during active monitoring. The app uses efficient audio processing that samples the microphone without unnecessary overhead. During typical use, battery impact is comparable to other audio apps. For extended monitoring sessions, we recommend keeping your device charged.
What is NIOSH and why does it matter?
NIOSH (National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health) establishes recommended exposure limits for workplace noise. Their standard defines how long you can safely be exposed to different noise levels. For example, 85 dB is safe for up to 8 hours, but 100 dB is safe for only 15 minutes. DecibelGuard uses the NIOSH formula to calculate your cumulative daily noise dose as a percentage.
Does DecibelGuard record audio?
No. DecibelGuard measures sound levels but does not record audio. The microphone signal is processed in real time to compute decibel values, and the raw audio data is immediately discarded. Only the computed sound level readings (dB values) are stored for your session history. No audio files are ever created, stored, or transmitted.
How do I export my data?
Open any recorded session and tap the export button to generate a CSV file containing timestamped dB readings, session averages, peak levels, and duration. You can also export a date range summary. The CSV file can be shared via email, AirDrop, or any compatible app for further analysis.
Does DecibelGuard work with Apple Health?
Yes. If you grant permission, DecibelGuard writes Environmental Sound Level samples to Apple Health. This data contributes to your hearing health profile alongside data from Apple Watch and other sources. You can enable or disable Health integration at any time in the app settings.
